Welcome to Wireless @ Virginia Tech

Wireless @ Virginia Tech was officially organized as a research group within The Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech in June 2004. However, our story dates back even further than that.

Formerly known as the Mobile and Portable Radio Research Group (MPRG), Wireless @ Virginia Tech has a history spanning almost 30 years of exceptional research results and innovations that have contributed to the rapid advancement of wireless technology.

Our 19 core faculty members have extensive technical expertise in wireless networking, communication systems, applied signal processing, dynamic spectrum access, cybersecurity, RF technologies, and system integration.

While expertise lies deep within electrical engineering, collaboration with disciplines outside of electrical engineering, such as computer science, mathematics, economics, and business, also makes up the Wireless @ Virginia Tech team.

Despite our outstanding research endeavors, developing our students remains our primary mission.  Wireless @ Virginia Tech has produced exceptionally gifted and well-trained students that are aggressively sought after in both government and the private sector.

Wireless @ Virginia Tech will continue to pioneer research and develop students in the field of wireless networks and technology.

Hands-on Learning for Radio Frequency Spectrum Innovation

Continuing education opportunity (2.0 CEUs): Self paced course sequence progresses from wireless fundamentals to AI/ML frequency agility in 20 hours. Web-based interactive simulations let you explore foundational concepts for wireless communications, spectrum sharing, and spectrum superiority, then program controllers to operate frequency-agile radio links in shared bands.

5G Fundamentals: A Concise Introduction to 5G

Wireless@VirginiaTech is pleased to offer complimentary 5G training in collaboration with Dr. Nishith Tripathi and Prof. Jeff Reed. This self-paced program provides a concise technical overview of 5G through a series of seven video sessions.
