2009 Virginia Tech Symposium on Wireless Personal Communications June 3-5, 2009
RECAP - The Wireless @ Virginia Tech 2009 Symposium & Wireless Summer School was held June 3-5 at The Inn at Virginia Tech. More than 150 attendees representing a wide array of companies, universities, and government agencies were present. We believe that the quality of this year’s symposium continued to exceed that of previous years.
Keynote speakers included Mr. Neil Fox of DARPA, who spoke on "The Future of Radio Communications: Increased Interactivity, Asymmetry and More Complex Dialog;" Dr. John Treichler of Applied Signal Technology, Inc. gave a keynote entitled "An Historical Perspective on Personal Wireless Communications - 1946 to 2016;" and Dr. Theodore S. Rappaport of the University of Texas, Austin, delivered the keynote on "The Emerging World of Massively Broadband Devices: 60 GHz and Above."
A total of ten oral presentations of technical papers, our largest and strongest collection ever, in the areas of cognitive radio, cognitive and cross layer networking, and physical communications and electromagnetics were presented. An expanded poster session including academic and industrial presentations allowed one-on-one technical discussions of recent advances in the field of wireless. Poster sessions were held during all daily refreshment breaks. The poster sessions included 30 posters from VT students, nine posters from others, and five demos, which discussed and demonstrated the latest breakthroughs in wireless communications and networks research.
This year’s summer school offered 13 tutorials in key areas of wireless communications and networks. Cognitive radio and cognitive networks continued to be popular tutorial topics as these approaches continue to mature: Drs. Monsiha Ghosh and Jianfeng of Phillips Research gave an industry perspective on these topics with a tutorial on cognitive radio usage of the TV spectrum, while Dr. Natasha Devroye of the University of Illinois at Chicago gave us a firm, information theoretical foundation for this work in her tutorial on the information theoretic limits of cognitive and cooperative communications. Other tutorials focused on related topics such as software-defined radio, emerging standards, and spectrum policy for wireless engineers. Maintaining the breadth of the tutorial offerings were tutorials on radiolocation in cellular networks, channel coding in mobile WiMax, interference excision, and backscatter radio and RFID. These tutorials provided an excellent opportunity for wireless professionals to learn about both the basics of each technology and recent breakthroughs in each area.
We always look forward to the symposium party on Thursday evening, which provided excellent opportunities to network with other wireless professionals and to catch up with old friends. In addition to relaxing with friends, we enjoyed a fantastic catered barbecue style meal from Professional Catering, lively music provided by local DJ Earl Brown, several rounds of dancing and gaming, and numerous drawings for door prizes.
Next June 2-4, 2010, we will celebrate our 20th anniversary of the annual symposium. We are planning some special celebratory activities and hope that each of you will make plans to attend. We issue a special invitation to our W@VT alums and former faculty and staff to participate and help us celebrate this exciting milestone.
