SYMPOSIUM HIGHLIGHTS
Wireless technology continues its unrelenting quest for innovation and expansion. To help professionals and academics stay abreast of the latest research, Wireless @ Virginia Tech will host its 22nd annual symposium and 8th annual summer school on wireless communications May 30 – June 1, 2012.

The technical program held on Wednesday morning will kick-off with a special plenary session with internationally recognized experts in the field of wireless communications presenting a sampling of the latest trends in wireless research.  In particular, the session will include talks on 60GHz radio, femtocells, dynamic spectrum access and recent wireless testbed developments.  Following this plenary session, additional oral presentations will focus on cognitive and software radios and more general advanced wireless research. The poster presentations from researchers around the world, will discuss a broad range of the latest breakthroughs in wireless communications and networking research.

The annual summer school, which kicks off on Wednesday afternoon, offers a fabulous line-up of 12 half-day tutorials in the key areas of wireless networks, DSP, cognitive radios, SDR, spectrum management, wireless antennas, RF hardware, wireless security, and LTE.  The full list of tutorial descriptions is provided in this brochure. These tutorials provide an excellent opportunity for wireless professionals to learn about both the basics of each technology and recent breakthroughs in each area.

Distinguished keynote speakers are Dr. Vinton Cerf, Google, speaking on the reinvention of the Internet, Mr. Dereck Orr, NIST, discussing new developments in public safety standards and technologies, and Dr. Vincent Poor, Princeton University, who will talk about physical layer security in wireless networks.

In addition to the symposium, there will be a Software-Defined Radio Design Challenge, which is a student design contest.  This is an activity of the Wireless Innovation Forum’s Educational Special Interest Group and is co-sponsored and hosted by Wireless @ Virginia Tech.  The competition will take place on Thursday, May 31, 2012, during the symposium.  Undergraduate and graduate students or teams of students, advised by a faculty member, are eligible and may propose and solve any problem related to software-defined radio.  Both U.S. and international teams are participating.  Additional information may be found at http://groups.winnforum.org/p/wi/et/wid=24.

As always, we look forward to the symposium party on Thursday evening.

We are confident that our discussions of cutting-edge topics will appeal to academic, as well as industry, professionals.  Don’t miss out – register today!
