OSSIE version 0.7.4 released

July 20, 2009

Version 0.7.4 of the OSSIE open-source SCA-based software defined radio software is now available for free download here. The software comprises a core framework, the Waveform Workshop rapid prototyping tools, signal processing components, device interface software, node/hardware platform configuration files, and sample applications.

The recommended operating systems for OSSIE are Fedora Core 8-9 and Ubuntu 8.04-9.04, but it can be ported to other versions of Linux. In addition to the source code, two options are available on the project web site that enable users to try OSSIE without performing a full installation. A bootable live DVD image can be used to run Ubuntu and OSSIE from a DVD, and optionally to install Ubuntu and OSSIE to a computer's hard disk drive. In addition, a VMware image is available that can be used to try OSSIE under operating systems supported by the VMware player.

Documentation includes an extensive user guide. Also, laboratory exercises developed by the Naval Postgraduate School and Virginia Tech use OSSIE to introduce SDR and SCA concepts. The exercises are suitable for classroom instruction or self-paced study and provide a basis for developing new signal processing components and waveform applications.

The 0.7.4 release includes several updates in addition to minor bug fixes. The connect tool functionality in the ALF waveform application visualization and debugging environment, which allows users to interconnect components and waveforms at run time, has been improved. ALF now provides the ability to connect to a remote naming service. The Waveform Dashboard, an easily configurable GUI for run-time configuration of OSSIE waveform applications, has been updated to support single-component waveforms created and launched in ALF. OSSIE now includes a ready-made example of the Lab 5 AM Receiver waveform for use with the Ettus Research Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP), along with two digital voice waveforms.
