NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)
Cognitive Communications @ Virginia Tech
Applications Accepted Through March 10, 2010
Overview:
The NSF REU Site at Virginia Tech (VT) supports 10 (ten) undergraduate students to participate in the
ongoing research activities of faculty members in the field of Cognitive Communications during an exciting 10-week summer session. The REU participants will receive formal instruction on Cognitive
Communications and will investigate various problems related to software defined radios, cognitive
radios, wireless networks, wireless communication circuits, and human factors engineering in
communications. This research will be performed under the day-to-day supervision of four VT faculty
mentors. This integrated educational and research experience will be enhanced by weekly formal
individual meetings, weekly formal research group meetings, and weekly informal brown-bag lunches.
We will also have REU group meetings where students will report their research problems, results to date,
future plans, and they will present short papers on some aspect of the research that they find interesting.
The REU participants are expected to contribute and advance their chosen research with the help of
faculty mentors. Various exciting outdoor social activities are also planned.
